Canadian Folk Art

Last night Gary and I settled in to watch a movie, as is often our routine on a Friday night. Once dinner is done and cleaned up, dogs are fed and kids are wherever they need to be, the evening is ours.  After flicking through trailer after trailer we each had a couple of picks – Gary’s, of course, being some action packed film to make my mind numb and eyes glaze over, and then mine, which were much much better than his, lol! I got to pick first, because, after all, my hubby is a gentleman (he even makes the popcorn and serves the drinks). I chose a film called “Maudie” about a Canadian women (Nova Scotia), born with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, among other disabilities, who was one of Canada’s most well known Folk artists. It was really a cute movie, starring Ethan Hawke (the only name I recognized) and a British actress who I thought did an amazing job as Maud. Even though Maud Lewis now has a movie made of her life, and the little house that she lived in has been moved to a museum, and her paintings sell for thousands of dollars,  she lived most of her life in poverty and was not really recognized until near the end of her life. Hmmmph. Ain’t that the way? But she wasn’t out for recognition. She painted because of the happiness it brought her and she lived a happy, fulfilled life, despite having little. I recommend watching it…even Gary enjoyed it, and we never did get around to watching his pick so I guess I’ll stand down next movie night.

So today is dreary. There is a bit of wind and a lot of low lying cloud around. I have been up for a couple of hours. I have thought about heading to yoga, but my coffee is so good, and my kitchen so warm, that I think I might hit an afternoon class and enjoy this cool morning right here. I love quiet mornings, and since Gary has been home, it is a treat to have no CNN droning on and on with some “breaking news” about the mess going on to the south of us.  He is still in bed, relaxing  (and probably watching either soccer or CNN). I delivered his tea to him this morning and then came downstairs to enjoy the solitude. Many people have asked how I like having him home all of the time now, and I can say quite truthfully, that I love it. Sure, it has changed the way I spend my time but we each have enough interests that we don’t have to spend every waking moment together …. I wouldn’t have it any other way. He is less stressed, happier, spends time with the kids more, and darn it, yesterday he vacuumed and washed the floors! How could I complain? Well, if I am made to listen to CNN too often, I get grumpy, but other than that……

Enjoy your day, lovelies.
